Play is the work of children
Playful Healing Spaces NPO (PBO) raises funding to install children’s play areas at hospitals, clinics, under-privileged schools and orphanages. We create world-class playgrounds, of lowest maintenance and highest durability, in disadvantaged communities.
“If a child has been able in his play to give up his whole loving being to the world around him, he will be able, in the serious tasks of later life, to devote himself with confidence and power to the service of the world.”
– Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925)

South Africa would be wise to do this
Sometimes, in our fight for life, we forget the true importance of what being a child is – to play.
Many South African children are born into circumstances that unfortunately put more importance on the fight for life than on the essence of being a child. Little souls who are suffering due to illness and injury, and who literally spend their lives in hospitals forgo this part of being a child. Those little ones also yearn for a childhood free from suffering, and while we can’t give that to them, we have the power to at least bring some joy to their lives.
Playful Healing Spaces NPO (PBO) gives a bit of childhood back to the child. For such a brief time of life, the job of being a child can so easily be lost by time spent in hospitals and clinics. By identifying spaces at these institutions where we could introduce play areas, we allow the patients some time out of their ward, making visiting hours more enjoyable for the children and parents.
Nature and Beyond is proud to be involved with the Playful Healing Spaces PBO. With the artificial lawn product, as well as making use of poured rubber for bicycle tracks and “road” surfaces, along with well chosen play apparatus, we can introduce spaces that will enhance the lives of the children and allow them to experience a bit of fun during their recuperation.
Orphanages and under-privileged schools can also be improved by introducing low maintenance green spaces to help the psyche of the children.
The cost of upkeep and maintenance is always an issue, especially in government and non-profit environments. Therefore, the products used will be especially chosen for their durability and sustainability. While some form of cleaning is inevitable, the play areas will not require excessive watering, or maintenance such as weekly mowing or weeding.
There are dozens of NPOs that have been established for the bare essentials, and for life-threatening causes. We have every respect for such NPOs. Playful Healing Spaces has been established because we believe that the need to create exactly that – Playful, Healing, Spaces – is just as important. By donating to our cause, you are essentially giving little lives the most primal gift that you can.
Three quarters of adults say that their fondest childhood memories are those that were spent outdoors playing. Impressions made in childhood are carried through our developmental years into adulthood. While it isn’t possible to ensure that a child will only experience happiness while growing up, it is possible that by the addition of a Playful Healing Space in the life of an ailing child, we could be providing the only happy memory that some children may have of their hospital stay.
This is why we invite corporate or individual donors to discuss contributions or potential partnerships. Please feel free to contact us. Every donation of any size makes a difference. With your help we can install perfect playgrounds in the most unexpected places.
South Africa would show foresight indeed by supporting this cause.
